The National Trust's largest single rural estate is Holnicote Estate on Exmoor. Holnicote Estate stretches over 20 square miles of Exmoor.the Exmoor National Park authority is the largest landowner on Exmoor and the National Trust is the second-largest landowner.
Holnicote Estate was given to the National trust in the 1940sand is run by a team of 18 staff and 250 countryside volunteers who have been protecting the heathland, coastline, ancient woodland and picture postcard villages such as Selworthy for over 60 years. In Horner Wood there are about 440 species of fungi, one of the largest red deer herds in the southwest, 15 bat species and the rare Heath Fritillary butterfly.
