The Glenthorne Estate was founded by Ben Halliday, a nouveau riche intellectual who had made his money during the Napoleonic wars. Glenthorne House was built between 1839 and 1846.

This pretty estate once had a landing quay, apparently much used by smugglers, which was swept away in storms many years ago. The Glenthorne Estate planed to build a small power station West of Porlock to supply electricity to this underdeveloped area. The Lynton & Barnstaple railway was a project designed in part to offer a steady supply of coal for thge power station.
To service the planned power station, Glenthorne Estate began to develop a harbour affording access to coasters at all states of the tide. A branch line was surveyed to join the main line at County Gate
