Some visitors take part in the traditional country pursuits of
hunting, shooting and fishing: pursuits that date back to a time
when it was necessary to supplement the diet by catching animals and fish.
hunting is still seen as a way of ontrolling pests as well
as an energetic day out for some. There are several game shoots
which are important for Exmoor’s economy. The sport is noisy
and, although controlled, the vast numbers of introduced birds
cause damage to woodlandhabitats and reduce the numbers
of native species.
Exmoor rivers are excellent for game fishing.
Salmon and sea-trout are caught in the main rivers while there
are brown trout in all the rivers.
Still-water trout fishing takes
place on the reservoirs at Wimbleball and Wistlandpound.
All inland fishing is controlled by licences. Sea fishing from
land and by boat is also popular.
