Backing up your Website

With most ISPs your web hosting server, which will contain hundreds of websites, is backed up daily in case of whole server problems. Each backup is normally just kept for a day, until the next backup overwrites it. This facilty does not allow you to selctivley restore your site, it is intended only as a way of restoring a whole server in case of server failure.

You might suddenly realsie that the image you had on your website two weeks ago and that you chose to erase was one that you might now need or your child might have pushed buttons on your computer and erased part of your website without you spotting it.

It is always an excellent idea to keep backup copies of your website so that you can go back and restore either the whole site or selected items. This is especially important if you are using Adobe Contribute or another Content Management System to edit your website. With Adobe Contribute there is only the server copy of your website so if a major diaster strikes then your backup can be used to reinstate your site.

There are two simple methods to achieve a website backup.

1. Using a Backup/Restore web hosting facility

If you have Magic Webs Ltd hosting then log into your Control Panel via www.magicwebs.co.uk/webspace/ and look under Files for the facility 'Backup/Restore' You can use this to backup your full web site (or particular folders) as a zip file that you can save on your own computer. For safety, in case your computer is stolen or severely damaged, I suggest that you keep copies on your computer and a CD stored well away from the computer.

2. Using WinHTTrack Website Copier

If it is more convenient then you can see the following section as a PDF document - click here

You can download the latest version of te program WinHTTrack Website Copier from:

Using WinHTTrack Website Copier

I suggest that you use this on a regular basis. With Contribute there is just one copy of your website and this is on the remote server. If you were to remove some key pages or in the very remote circumstance that the web server went down and all the multiple backups were destroyed then your website would vanish. By using WinHTTrack Website Copier you can make a copy of your website and save this to CD or however you think it best to preserve the site.

1. Install WinHTTrack Website Copier from the download above

2. Create a folder on your computer called:

WinHT website backup

3. Run WinHTTrack Website Copier

4. Click on the Next> button

5. Fill in the screen. I give an example below. You will use your website name in place of the phrase Everything Exmoor. The basepath for you will be got by clicking on the dots at the end of the basepath line and finding the folder you created earlier called:

WinHT website backup

Click Next>

6. Complete the screen as below but putting your website address in place of www.everythingexmoor.org.uk

Click Next>

7. Complete the screen by choosing the appropriate selection from the drop down for Remote Connection

Click Finish and the website will start to be saved.

8. Close the program WinHTTrack Website Copier

Open up the folder you made called:

WinHT website backup

Double click on index.html and you should be able to follow through to see a full copy of your website running off your computer and not from the internet

8. Once saved to your computer you may want to put a copy of the whole site onto a CD for extra safety.

10. Use WinHTTrack Website Copier to make a new backup of your site every time you make changes that merit a new backup.
